The Toji Temple's Lodgings Will Be Reborn as a Hotel
Constructed approximately 1,200 years ago when Japan's capital was moved to Heian, the Toji Temple is the only true remnant of that great city.
Registered as a World Heritage Site in 1994, the temple grounds are dotted with the five-story pagoda, the main hall (Kondo), and the Goei-do Hall. One part of the temple offered lodgings for monks who made pilgrimages from all over Japan, and in 1968, the Rakunan Kaikan was built to welcome monks and travelers alike.
The KYOTO TOJI project aims to reinterpret this architectural heritage, and transform it into a hotel space for modern travelers.

A hotel that inherits the Five Great Elementsthat reside in the five-story pagoda
The five-story pagoda, Toji Temple's signature structure, is based on the "five elements" in esoteric Buddhism: sky, wind, fire, water, and earth. These elements inform the spatial design of KYOTO TOJI.

The impermanence and emptiness of everything.
Sky symbolizes the world of enlightenment and true essence.
