Our sustainability principles

NOT A HOTEL leverages cutting-edge technology and design to encourage sustainable and socially responsible practices throughout our business, properties, and the surrounding communities.

The Sharing Economy

NOT A HOTELā€™s co-ownership model is based on the Japanese concept of mottainai, which is the mindset for being conscious of and reducing waste.

By offering a system where owners buy and use only as much as they need, NOT A HOTEL helps to minimize unnecessary consumption and decrease the waste of natural resources.

Architecture that endures

Unlike some countries where homes are built to last for generations,Ā most houses in Japan are constructed for use only a few decades before being demolished and rebuilt. While this is a cultural and pragmatic response to the ever-present threat of natural disasters, even the most eco-friendly architecture will lose its value if itā€™s rebuilt so frequently.

At NOT A HOTEL, we work with architects to build homes that endure the test of time. We believe that our products should be cherished for 50 or even 100 years to come. This is the epitome of sustainability and ecologically responsible design.

Solutions through design and technology

At NOT A HOTEL, we believe that environmental considerations and design excellence are not mutually exclusive.
The NOT A HOTEL SETOUCHI home exemplifies this thinking in its grid of solar panels tiled onto the surface of its roof, which mimics the look of traditional Japanese kawara tiled roofs, while also providing renewable energy for the home.
This hamonious balance of design and technology allows us to find ingenious solutions for achieving excellence in both aesthetics and environmental performance.

Revitalizing regional communities

Since our inception, NOT A HOTEL has opened many properties outside of the heavily touristed cities, including regional areas that have faced economic and demographic challenges. Despite being less well-known, these places possess unique attractions and beautiful scenery awaiting to be discovered.

We hope to align our business with the overall interests and well-being of the various regional areas in Japan, and we craft our homes to harmonize with their surroundings. With overtourism becoming a problem in Japan, NOT A HOTEL aims to maximize the potential of areas that have yet to receive as much attention. NOT A HOTEL AOSHIMA, for example, aims to restore vitality to the Aoshima area of Miyazaki Prefecture and put the spotlight back on its charms.

Case Studies

Solar Tile Roofs

We have reinterpreted the traditional Japanese kawara roof tiles from a technological perspective to incorporate solar power capabilities, becoming the first to introduce this type of innovative roofing material in Japan. At NOT A HOTEL SETOUCHI, rest can easy knowing that your stay is powered by renewable energy.

Transforming Ruins into Community Revitalization Hubs

The Aoshima region in Miyazaki prefecture had long been neglected, resulting in abandoned buildings and the community slowly losing its vitality. There, we built NOT A HOTEL AOSHIMA with the goal of transforming it into a lush, vibrant gathering place and bringing visitors back to appreciate its charm.
